Helpful MLA Style Web Sites

I'm sure questions will arise as you write your essays in MLA format. Here are a few helpful links I found that should answer most of your basic questions.

College of St. Benedict St. John's University Writing Center
This is a collection of handouts about every aspect of writing a research paper. The MLA section at the bottom will be especially helpful.

The OWL at Perdue
This is my favorite MLA guide. Everything you want to know about formatting your paper in your favorite word processor (I still don't know how any of you can prefer M$ Word).

This is not required this time, but when you are required to use a Works Cited page, you can use an online citation generator. The one below is my favorite. Just insert the information about your source and it will spit out an MLA citation that can be cut and pasted into your paper.

Here is a template that you should use (Windoze users should right-click the link, and Apple users should use control-click). It contains the correct formatting and should open in any word processor:

Obviously if there is time, you need to get the photo strip/caption quotes/sidebar/True Life quote and any other component of the page done, but 1-3 above is the minimum due by Friday! Late is NOT an option!

Feb. Deadlines

OK guys, we had to postpone our Feb. edition due to the tragic circumstances of last week.

Chandler is working on a story about Ms. Wilburn (feel free to ask her how you can help) and we have hopefully got a handle on what we are doing for the cover art. Any suggestions?

Here are a few things that must happen by the beginning of next week (Feb. 16):

1. Lit. Mag. content must be ready and layout completed

2. All pages must be proofed (grab your favorite colored pencil!)

3. Everyone must submit 12 wonderful story ideas (complete with slugs and sections) for the March edition. Forms are in the drawer next to the door

4. See section editors about specific stories

5. Check the revision folder and get your stories back in production ASAP!

6. We are looking for Wilburn remembrances. We need to type up as many of these as we can find

"Why Teach English?" Essay

Read the handout (download a copy here). Make sure you understand the 6 common possible purposes of English classes. If you have questions about any of the purposes, contact me and I can explain.

Rank the 6 purposes from Most Important to Least Important.

Be sure you can describe why each possible purpose was ranked in the order you chose. It is probable that you will believe some of the purposes are poor reasons for teaching English. If that is the case, you will rank them at the bottom and explain why you did so.

You will write a formal timed essay in class answering:

What are the most important reasons for teaching English?
&
(One of the following questions)
What are the least important reasons for teaching English?
What are poor reasons for teaching English?

Ground Rules
Write in blue or black ink or type and print in black ink.
Double space your paper. (if you don't know what double spacing is, ask!)
Don't write on the back of a sheet of paper.
Must have at least 5 paragraphs.
Intro. paragraph must end with a thesis statement.
Conclusion paragraph should not simply repeat the intro.
You will have at least 3 body paragraphs.
No paragraph will have fewer than three sentences.

Recognizing Satire (using The Onion)

After you have defined the satire terms, let's see if you can apply that information. Below you will find links to 6 satirical articles from a hilarious (and often inappropriate) news parody website called The Onion. Read each of the articles and answer the following 2 questions after reading each article.

What is being ridiculed in the article? Name as many targets of the satire as you can (there are almost always more than 3 targets).
What is the point or message of the author? In other words, what lesson does the satirical author attempt to teach the reader?

To make this perfectly clear, you'll neatly write down the title of each article on your own paper and answer the same two questions for each article (read 6 articles and answer 12 questions).

We're going to begin with something a little bit light hearted (or is it?). TIOBE is a play that is guaranteed to get plenty of laughs, but after the laughing subsides, hopefully it will get you thinking too. That's what good satire is all about!
