New coach make impact on team: Bennie Gibbs

By Kriste Wiggs

Pebblebrook has a new Varsity Boys Basketball coach. His name is Bennie Gibbs and he has been coaching for 13 years.

Gibbs came from Berkmar High School in Gwinnett County were he coached for three years.

His plan for Varsity is to represent the school by hard work and being good role models. Gibbs believes that getting to the playoffs is a tangible feat, but everyone is going to have to work hard and collaborate among each other.

“You can’t skip from Z to A you have to go from A to Z, said Gibbs.

Gibbs admits that there are not any players standing out right now, because the team needs time to grow. Although Gibbs has not found any of the players to be outstanding, he does feel that all of the players on the team have an unlimited amount of potential.

“Potential is untapped resource. Anybody can have potential, but you still have to be willing to learn and love the game, said Gibbs.
Gibbs played basketball for three years at Harper High School and two years at Tulsa College in Oklahoma. One of his most notable accomplishments would have to be the privilege of coaching professional basketball player, Shareef Abdur-Rahim, who plays for the Sacramento Kings.

“Every once in a while we [Shareef and I] meet up at Wheeler High School and talk about what is going on with each other, said Gibbs.

Gibbs never planned to go to the NBA, because of the level the game is played at and because it is more demanding than college basketball.

“In the pro’s you just can’t be the best regionally, you have to be the best nationally, said Gibbs.
