GeekSpeak: Apple’s iPhone blows away competition

By Frederick Brown

Apple has been cranking out some good products for a few years, but one that really draws attention is the iPod. Nowadays, its not to so surprising to find these MP3 players in the hands of people all around the world.

In fact, you could say that these are almost as successful as cell phones, which also (in some models) are able to play MP3s. There is a reason why I mentioned cell phones, and you can probably guess why.

In January, Apple unveiled something that might win over the cell phone market by a long shot, and that is the iPhone. Sure, you have heard of the RAZR, which is the most successful cell phone on the market, but it might be blown away very soon.

The new Apple iPhone sports the ability to act like an iPod, surf the net with Apple’s web browser Safari, keep an address book, send e-mail, run little mini-programs called Widgets which are found in Mac OS X, and numerous other cool things.

I’ll briefly explain the features. When I said that it could act like an iPod I wasn’t kidding. The iPhone has a four or eight-gigabyte hard drive and can also play movies and music with the ability to sync with iTunes.

The iPhone can surf the web using Wi-Fi and it uses a full service web browser that renders pages just like a normal computer. It can keep an address book of your contacts, and can even keep photos of them to help you remember their faces in case you forget (which is shameful in my opinion). Users can check e-mail from Gmail, or another email service that is compatible with POP3 or IMAP clients. It has the Widgets as I mentioned before that are found in Mac OS X. Widgets are basically little applications that can give you weather reports, stock information, sports scores and much more.

Apple has given a release date for the iPhone, which will be sometime in June this year, and it will cost approximately $500.
